Supporting a Healthy Lifestyle to Prevent Obesity
Obesity: An Increasing Health Dilemma Worldwide
Obesity is a state of increase in energy intake over energy expenditure, which has become a major health issue worldwide. This condition is often accompanied by obesity-associated diseases such as type 2 diabetes (T2D) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
Factors Contributing to Obesity
Overeating, the consumption of energy-dense foods high in sugar and fat, particularly saturated fat and trans fat, and overconsumption of sugar sweetened beverages, are considered to be the result of a gastronomic revolution. Other contributing factors to obesity include urbanization, the globalization of food markets and fast-food chains encouraging consumption of processed foods, and a sedentary lifestyle.
Genetics and Epigenetic Factors
In addition to lifestyle and environmental factors, genetics and epigenetic related factors also cause or contribute to obesity. Interaction between multiple genes can contribute to the development of obesity, and epigenetic factors can alter gene expression, leading to an increased risk of obesity.
Metabolic Complications of Obesity
Obesity leads to the development of several metabolic complications including insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, hypertension, inflammation, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
Mechanistic View of Obesity
Adipocytes store extra lipids as triglycerides (TG), and then they secrete leptin to control food intake and to trigger fatty acid (FA) oxidation. Therefore, adipocytes control both hypothalamus-regulated food intake and peripherally-regulated fatty acid oxidation in non-adipose tissues. Once the adipose tissue reaches its maximum expandability, excessive TG spills over to non-adipose tissues such as skeletal muscle and the liver, leading to ectopic accumulation of lipids.
Tips for a Healthy Diet & Lifestyle
A healthy diet and regular exercise are crucial for maintaining a healthy body and preventing obesity. Here are some tips to support a healthy lifestyle:
- Eat a well-balanced diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein.
- Avoid overeating and limit your intake of high-calorie foods and beverages, especially those that are high in sugar and fat.
- Stay active by engaging in regular exercise or physical activity, such as walking, jogging, or cycling.
- Get enough sleep and manage stress to avoid emotional eating and bingeing.
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
- Practice stress management techniques such as meditation or yoga!
